In its efforts to enhance energy efficiency, a key theme at this year‘s Hanover Fair, ABB has addressed the entire energy chain. “We have solutions from A to Z,” said Smits. “And that makes us unique in the market place.” In power generation, ABB‘s Optimax system can save energy by optimizing a plant‘s processing operations, said Smits. Since a one percent improvement in the efficiency of a 750-megawatt power station equates to a saving of 40,000 tons of CO2 emissions, the environmental benefits of optimization are significant, and so are the cost savings. In power grids, ABB is helping to distribute electricity more efficiently by enhancing the capacity of existing infrastructure, using reactive power compensating systems such as FACTS （flexible alternating current transmission systems）, and reducing losses in transmission using HVDC （high-voltage direct current）. And for end-users of electricity, ABB provides more efficient motors and drives to power and operate machinery. With orders in Germany in 2006 up 32 percent from 2005, Smits presented a very positive outlook for ABB. The company‘s German operations concentrate on sustainable growth through opportunities in Central Europe and the development of new technologies in its research departments. Smits pointed out that one third of ABB‘s patents originate in Germany, an impressive record. He also highlighted ABB‘s initiatives in human resources that recognize changing demographics that will have a particular impact on European society. ABB‘s “Generations” initiative seeks to focus on competence rather than age, and to foster the mentoring of new staff by more experienced workers with a broad skill base to draw upon.
